It's estimated that 1 in every 4 women and 1 in 7 men will experience some form of domestic violence from an intimate partner in their lifetime. Even though an estimated 12 million people are victims of domestic violence each year, most cases go unreported to law enforcement. While 85% of domestic violence victims are women, it's important for all people to know how to help someone in an abusive relationship or situation find help.
.Domestic Violence Awareness Month evolved from the "Day of Unity" held in October 1981 and conceived by the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence. The intent was to connect advocates across the nation who were working to end violence against women and their children. The Day of Unity soon became an entire week devoted to a range of activities conducted at the local, state, and national level.
